Recruited monsters do not level up like normal party members, instead their statistics scale with the level of the Hero, resulting in them progressively growing more powerful.Infamous Monsters must first be defeated in order to recruit them.In the 3DS version, where monster encounters are visible, they have a word bubble above their head containing two orange crossed swords in order to distinguish them they are also visible from much farther away unlike the other standard encounters.In the PS2 version they appear as the only roaming encounters, as in both dungeons and the field map, monster encounters are randomly generated and invisible.These Infamous Monsters are identified by different means depending on the version of the game: Only specific monsters can be recruited, and they are known as Infamous Monsters.
Upon doing so, after being formally introduced to the Monster Arena, the Hero is free to recruit other monsters to their Monster Team. In order to be able to recruit monsters, the party first has to speak to Morrie at Morrie's Place on the way to Pickham from Ascantha he will task the party with recruiting 3 monsters: Smiles, Lonely Joe and Squiggles.
